Soy, beeswax or paraffin: what actually changes when you burn it

Notes from the counter at The Candle Shop in Chester, NY.

The three waxes behave differently

Paraffin is a petroleum by-product, holds fragrance strongly and burns bright. Soy is a vegetable wax that burns cooler and slower. Beeswax is the oldest of the three, burns longest and carries a faint natural honey scent that cannot be removed.

None of them is universally better. The right wax depends on whether you want scent throw, burn hours, or a candle that will not tint a pale wall over a winter.

Burn time follows density

Beeswax is the densest of the three, which is why a beeswax pillar of a given size outlasts an identical soy one, sometimes substantially. Soy in turn outlasts paraffin at the same dimensions.

That is why we publish the maker rated hours on every listing. Comparing two candles by size alone will mislead you if they are made of different wax.

Soot is mostly about the wick

The black marking people blame on paraffin is usually a wick problem. A wick that is too long produces an unstable flame that cannot burn its fuel completely, and the unburnt carbon lands on the glass and the wall.

Trimming to roughly a quarter inch before every light reduces soot dramatically regardless of which wax you bought.

Scent throw versus clean burning

Paraffin carries fragrance furthest, which is why heavily scented candles often use it or a blend. Soy holds scent well but throws it more gently, filling a room rather than a floor.

If you are sensitive to fragrance, the unscented beeswax and soy ranges exist precisely for that reason and are a large part of what this shop sells.

Tunnelling and the first burn

A candle remembers its first burn. If it is extinguished before the melt pool reaches the full diameter, it will tunnel down the middle and waste the outer wax for the rest of its life.

Allow roughly an hour per inch of diameter on the first lighting. A three inch pillar therefore wants about three hours the first time.

Storage between seasons

Wax fades and softens in direct sunlight and can bloom — a harmless white film on beeswax that indicates purity rather than a fault. Store candles cool, dark and upright.

Tapers stored warm will bend under their own weight, which is why they arrive boxed flat and should stay that way.

Where this sits in the shop

The Candle Shop groups its stock into 5 categories, so most of what is discussed above lives in one or two of them:

Browsing by category is usually quicker than searching, because the groups follow how the goods are actually used rather than how a supplier lists them.

The largest group at the moment is Beeswax Candles with 7 items, and the smallest is Votives and Tealights with 5. Those counts move as stock comes in and goes out, so they are worth checking rather than assuming.

From our shelves

A few items currently in stock that relate to this article:

Across the whole catalogue prices currently run from $9.99 to $49.99, with most of the range clustered around the middle of that span. Stock and prices on the product pages are live, so they are the figures to trust rather than anything quoted in an article.

Ordering, delivery and returns

Free US shipping on orders over $45; a flat $6.50 below that. Orders are picked and packed at the Chester store on business days, and a tracking number follows by email once the carrier scans the parcel.

If something is not right, there are 30 days from delivery to send it back unused and in its packaging. The full detail is on the Shipping Policy and Returns and Refunds pages, and the FAQ covers the questions that come up most.

How we decide what to stock

The Candle Shop carries soy, beeswax and unscented candles, and the range is deliberately narrower than a warehouse catalogue. A line earns its place by being asked for repeatedly at the counter in Chester and by coming back without complaints — not by having the widest margin.

When something stops meeting that bar it comes off the shelf rather than being discounted until it moves. That is why the catalogue on this site changes slowly and why the specification tables on the product pages quote the maker rather than our own marketing.

Quick answers

Which candles are unscented?

A large part of the shelf is fragrance-free — the beeswax, palm tealight and plain pillar ranges in particular. Each product title and specification table states scented or unscented.

How long will a candle actually burn?

We publish the maker rated burn time on each listing rather than estimating. Trim the wick to about a quarter inch each time and you will land close to it.
