Candles for power cuts: what actually belongs in an emergency box

Notes from the counter at The Candle Shop in Chester, NY.

Unscented is the right choice here

In a small closed room during an outage, a heavily scented candle becomes overwhelming quickly. Emergency lighting should be fragrance free so it can be used for hours without complaint.

It is also cheaper per hour, which matters when the point is to hold a reserve you may never use.

Pillars over tapers for stability

A wide based pillar stands on its own on an uneven surface. A taper needs a holder, and in a dark house a knocked-over taper is a genuine hazard.

If you keep tapers, keep the holders in the same box rather than in a drawer somewhere else.

Tealights are the workhorse

Tealights are contained in their own metal cup, stack densely and burn for a known number of hours. A bulk pack takes very little space and covers a long outage.

They also work in almost any improvised holder, which cannot be said for pillars.

Store the matches with the candles

The most common failure of an emergency candle box is that the means of lighting it lives elsewhere. Keep matches or a lighter in the same sealed container.

Paper matches degrade in humidity; wooden matches in a closed tin last far longer.

Think about surfaces in advance

Decide now which heatproof surfaces candles will stand on. Improvising this in the dark is how furniture gets damaged and how fires start.

A couple of ceramic saucers in the box costs almost nothing and removes the decision entirely.

Rotate the stock

Wax does not spoil quickly, but wicks can absorb damp and matches degrade. Checking the box once a year and burning the oldest candles keeps it reliable.

It also confirms the box is still where you think it is.

Where this sits in the shop

The Candle Shop groups its stock into 5 categories, so most of what is discussed above lives in one or two of them:

Browsing by category is usually quicker than searching, because the groups follow how the goods are actually used rather than how a supplier lists them.

The largest group at the moment is Beeswax Candles with 7 items, and the smallest is Votives and Tealights with 5. Those counts move as stock comes in and goes out, so they are worth checking rather than assuming.

From our shelves

A few items currently in stock that relate to this article:

Across the whole catalogue prices currently run from $9.99 to $49.99, with most of the range clustered around the middle of that span. Stock and prices on the product pages are live, so they are the figures to trust rather than anything quoted in an article.

Ordering, delivery and returns

Free US shipping on orders over $45; a flat $6.50 below that. Orders are picked and packed at the Chester store on business days, and a tracking number follows by email once the carrier scans the parcel.

If something is not right, there are 30 days from delivery to send it back unused and in its packaging. The full detail is on the Shipping Policy and Returns and Refunds pages, and the FAQ covers the questions that come up most.

How we decide what to stock

The Candle Shop carries soy, beeswax and unscented candles, and the range is deliberately narrower than a warehouse catalogue. A line earns its place by being asked for repeatedly at the counter in Chester and by coming back without complaints — not by having the widest margin.

When something stops meeting that bar it comes off the shelf rather than being discounted until it moves. That is why the catalogue on this site changes slowly and why the specification tables on the product pages quote the maker rather than our own marketing.

Quick answers

How long will a candle actually burn?

We publish the maker rated burn time on each listing rather than estimating. Trim the wick to about a quarter inch each time and you will land close to it.
