Notes from the counter at The Candle Shop in Chester, NY.
Count the hours before the quantity
The question is not how many candles you need but how many hours they must cover. A reception running six hours needs candles rated for it, or a plan to replace them mid-service.
Working backwards from hours prevents the classic problem of tables going dark during the speeches.
Dripless matters on linen
Tapers described as dripless are formulated so the wax burns rather than runs, provided they are kept out of draughts. On hired linen this is the difference between a deposit returned and a deposit lost.
No taper is dripless in a cross breeze, so plan the room as well as the candle.
Height and sight lines
Tall tapers look striking and block conversation across a table. Low pillars and votives keep sight lines open, which is why most caterers mix the two.
If you want height, keep the flame either well above or well below seated eye level.
Unscented at the table
Scented candles compete with food. Almost every catering guide reaches the same conclusion: keep fragrance out of the dining room and save it for the entrance.
This is another reason a large part of our shelf is deliberately fragrance free.
Buy a test candle first
Burn one of whatever you intend to order in bulk, timed, in a room like the venue. It is the only way to know the real burn rate and whether the colour reads warm or cold under the lighting.
A single test candle is cheap insurance against a large order that does not suit.
Order a margin
Ten percent over the calculated count covers breakages, a longer evening and the tables nobody counted. Left over unscented candles always get used.
Running out is far more expensive than a small surplus.
Where this sits in the shop
The Candle Shop groups its stock into 5 categories, so most of what is discussed above lives in one or two of them:
- Beeswax Candles — 7 items
- Pillar Candles — 5 items
- Scented Soy Candles — 6 items
- Taper and Dinner Candles — 4 items
- Votives and Tealights — 5 items
Browsing by category is usually quicker than searching, because the groups follow how the goods are actually used rather than how a supplier lists them.
The largest group at the moment is Beeswax Candles with 7 items, and the smallest is Votives and Tealights with 5. Those counts move as stock comes in and goes out, so they are worth checking rather than assuming.

Ordering, delivery and returns
Free US shipping on orders over $45; a flat $6.50 below that. Orders are picked and packed at the Chester store on business days, and a tracking number follows by email once the carrier scans the parcel.
If something is not right, there are 30 days from delivery to send it back unused and in its packaging. The full detail is on the Shipping Policy and Returns and Refunds pages, and the FAQ covers the questions that come up most.
How we decide what to stock
The Candle Shop carries soy, beeswax and unscented candles, and the range is deliberately narrower than a warehouse catalogue. A line earns its place by being asked for repeatedly at the counter in Chester and by coming back without complaints — not by having the widest margin.
When something stops meeting that bar it comes off the shelf rather than being discounted until it moves. That is why the catalogue on this site changes slowly and why the specification tables on the product pages quote the maker rather than our own marketing.
Quick answers
Which candles are unscented?
A large part of the shelf is fragrance-free — the beeswax, palm tealight and plain pillar ranges in particular. Each product title and specification table states scented or unscented.
How long will a candle actually burn?
We publish the maker rated burn time on each listing rather than estimating. Trim the wick to about a quarter inch each time and you will land close to it.
